Time is everything in the life of an entrepreneur. Because of a very tight schedule, no one realizes the important of time management before than them. It is something they struggle with on a daily basis. Apart from managing their own time, they also have to take care of the allocated timings for those working with them. This is why time management for managers is extremely important. For some, it is something they are great with. Others have to struggle with it and face a couple of dreadful incidents throughout their career.
Luckily, it is a skill that can get better with time if you make conscious effort. Here are some ways you can get perfect at time management as a manager.
A man with no plan often gets through a lot of difficult times. A lot of managers complain that they don’t even find time to make plans. This is a wrong management practice and you must get rid of it soon. It is best to rise up early, and while you are having your first cup of coffee in peace, get hold of a diary where you can make constructive plans for the day, week and even the month. It may not go exactly as what you have planned out, but you would still find it better to manage your time this way. Most of the managers have their to-do lists running in their mind all day long. The human mind is vulnerable to making a lot of mistakes and you wouldn’t always be able to address everything you have in your mind to your team. For this reason, it is important for it to be on a piece of paper so that you can address it to everyone accurately.
2. Focus on One Task at a Time
All entrepreneurs must know how to multi task. However, that doesn’t mean you end up starting everything together. This makes time management incredibly difficult and you wouldn’t be able to stay productive along the way. It’s best to complete the same type of tasks together so that you can entirely get done with them first before you move on to something else. For instance, dedicate a part of your day when you just write emails, or a chunk of the day when you just make phone calls and answer them.
3. Keep Away from Distracters
Sadly, we live in a world that has a lot of distractions. The problem with distractions is that sometimes they make your productivity suffer a great deal. Unfortunately, you cannot eliminate it completely no matter what you do. However, there must be a part of your day where you keep yourself unavailable for everyone else so that you can focus on the most important tasks. Let your phone go on voicemail and put up a ‘do not disturb’ sign on your door. This way, those working with you will also get trained to work around your schedule and you’ll be able to focus on tasks without any distraction.
4. Effective Communication
You might be surprised to know that a lot of time crises arise merely because of miscommunication. Effective communication is an important ingredient to any business. You must regularly take out time to communicate with your team. Instead of addressing orders in a top bottom manner, explain and understand what is going on every day. Some managers like dedicating certain part of their day for this purpose where all the time members meet with the manager and communicate what is needed for the day.
5. Take a Break
You might think getting a task completed is very important so it is wise to skip that break. Not really. Longer working hours affects your productivity and adds to monotony. Instead of being able to manage the time well, you wouldn’t be able to focus well on the assigned tasks. It is very important to relax your mind and take regular breaks for effective time management.
